The couple is so sweet, and they are very knowledgeable!

Reviewed by: Courtney , 2019/06/21

Cannot recommend this experience enough. Not only were we served delicious tea and cake handmade by Mrs. Kuge, she and her husband were very diligent with their teaching and even showed us where to buy everything we needed to make our own lacquerware at home. Definitely bringing visiting friends and family here again in the future. A little Japanese will go a long way, but not necessary. Mrs. Kuge speaks English well, and her husband is so sweet it doesn’t matter :)

  • The teacup from the 1910s we were given, chipped and needing repair.

  • Repaired!

  • The apple tea was DELICIOUS!

Really enjoyed spending time at kuge! I learned to repair ceramics and create art with a technique called kintsugi. They were very welcoming and exemplified Japanese hospitality. Highlight of my time in japan. Inspired to practice what I have learned!

Absolutely wonderful experience!

Reviewed by: Andrew & Piper, 2019/04/16

Having spent nearly two weeks in Japan doing various activities, I can say without hyperbole that this was the highlight of our trip. It was an intimate experience where we learned what is both a practical and artistic pursuit. The couple that runs Kuge Crafts are incredible sweet and patient, and they made sure that we had an excellent experience. They answered all of our many questions, and showed us examples of what could be done with kintsugi (they really are masters). They'll even take pictures of you working.

What's best is that they give you a complete shopping list for the exact items you need at the local craft store in order to do this back home. (Just make sure you go to the exact one they mention in Shinjuku; others won't have the correct materials.)

While the store is a little bit out of the way, it is *absolutely* worth doing!

  • Being shown the technique.

This was a thoughtful and well planned guide to kintsugi. From a delicious treat to begin, to the history of the patterns of our chosen cups, to a guided experience of kintsugi. We took home our repaired cups and look forward to them being a beautiful reminder of Japan!

Most amazing experience in Japan

Reviewed by: Hanna, 2018/12/30

This was one of the greatest afternoons we had in Tokyo. Our hosts were incredibly nice, they told us about the history of the potteries and kintsugi as well. If you are interested in Japanese art, philosophy and history, and would like to create something, and not just look at things in a museum you cannot miss out on this experience!

Beautiful Time with the best Teachers

Reviewed by: Indra & Christie, 2018/07/21

Yoshiichiro and Yoshiko Kuge are the best people that you would want to meet and learn from.

The are very friendly and definitely lovely. They have been doing pottery for more than 50 years and practice Kintsugi art for 35 years. They are passionate at what they do and willing to teach us what they have in their hands.

Me and my husband had the best time in Tokyo that 2 hours as we learn basic kintsugi art. Definitely a thing to remember for our trip.

Would definitely recommend this to everyone that we know . Thank you Yoshiichiro and Yoshiko Kuge. Hugs...

I hope this isn't a duplicate post. We got there early and the family let us in any way. We were given melon cake and a homemade tea that is the best tea I have ever had. We got to pick our piece. They told us my piece was 200 years old. One teacher does a piece as well so you can watch. Both of them were very nice and fun. They gave us a tour of their pottery studio as well. They have a new packaging system so you can leave with your piece. They showed us all of the materials needed and they have made a photoshopping list so you can just snap a photo of the supplies. They told us where we could by in Tokyo and we did. The wife could speak some English. I would recommend you have someone with you that can understand basic Japanese. I highly recommend this class!

Kintsugi

Reviewed by: M Sal, 2018/05/18

I've always wanted to try Kintsugi and the teachers were so gracious and very skilled. I learned the basics of Kintsugi and was given a list of supplies to purchase if I was wanted to continue the art of Kintsugi. The tea and brownies were some of the best I've ever had. Very charming experience and I would highly recommend it to anyone.

Yoshiichiro and Yoshiko were welcoming, competent, and knowledgeable teachers in the art of Kintsugi. While the project we worked on was simple that day they showed me other examples and possibilities of this art form. They have been practicing this art form for over 30 years and their passion shows. I left feeling very inspired, with a list and exactly where to source needed supplies to continue Kintsugi at home.
Thank you very much for this fantastic experience!

A very authentic experience with wonderful people

Reviewed by: Joanna, 2018/03/05

I had the best time. The studio is very small and authentic. I got a lot of one on one time with the owners and they kindly helped me fix my own broken mug. They ran over by nearly an hour to help me finish. They were both so kind and attentive and really good at what they do. I would recommend this to anyone! Please go try it out. It's a nice change of pace from visiting downtown Tokyo.

Amazing experience with lovely instructors!

Reviewed by: Vanessa, 2017/07/28

Even though I was quite late for my workshop (train faults), the instructors were really sweet about it, letting me catch my breath before the lesson started! The sweets and coffee that were served were very nice for a hot summer's day, and the lesson itself was well taught, patiently and with a lot of attention. I would totally come back for another experience/workshop, and I hope to be back next year again!

Gold Repair Course in Tokyo (Shin-Koenji Station)

Reviewed by: Desiree, 2017/07/14

We had a reaaly good time with Yoshiko and Yoshiichiro!
The description of the route was very helpful, we had no problems in finding the studio.
While we attended, two older Japanese people did some gold repair as well. We had a lot of fun together!
The hosts gave us sweets and tea, and we talked a lot about our Japan travel.
We worked on chipped tea cups. The people who do a regular course a few times a months had more complicated things like broken plates.
The hosts also told us where to buy the materials in Japan.
It is a very good experience to get a glimpse in the possibilities of this technique.
But bear in mind that you wont be able to do a big piece in the given time.

  • concentrated working

  • This is an example of what is possible with this technique. You wont be doing such a complicated thing

A beautiful Japanese art form

Reviewed by: Rachel, 2016/05/04

What a wonderful experience! I really enjoyed my afternoon with Yoshiichiro and Yoshiko Kuge, who patiently taught me the basics of Kintsugi over coffee and cake. Even with my limited knowledge in Japanese, the Kuges spoke enough English to clearly explain each step to me. During the lesson, we chatted about other Torontonians who have crossed paths with the Kuges, which was pretty funny. Overall, a really lovely workshop and highly recommended for those looking to do something special and unique!

Lovely Experience

Reviewed by: Miss C, 2015/07/04

Ever since seeing one of those gold-repaired tea bowls I wanted to try it, and this was a really fun morning class. It was a really 'local' experience as there were few neighborhood ladies doing crafts at the same time, and it was cool to explore the area around the studio. The teacher was super sweet, and can speak basic English. She even served sweets and coffee, a lovely bonus!
