Kaori-san was very friendly, helpful and can speak English very well. We had a great time learning how to make not only Okonomiyaki, but also dashi stock, miso soup, picked cucumbers and onigiri. She also taught us about japanese table manners and umami taste, leaving us with useful information for our time in Japan, all the while keeping the class interactive and fun. We definitely enjoyed our time with Kaori-san, and would love to go back again if the chance arises.
I definitely highly recommend taking this class if you're in Kyoto!

Wonderful, kind hosts with a very clean and homely space to do the class then enjoy the meal. Great explanations despite limited English. We learnt a lot and are inspired to make our own soba at home. The house is a little hard to find so make sure you download a good map and leave a little extra time. Highly recommend this as a way to spent a couple of hours in a traditional setting. Thank you for the hospitality!

So worth the money, you get to grind the buckwheat, mix into a dough, roll it out, cut it up. Which sounds simple but it's so delightfully intense. The sensei is so nice and patient, we didn't speak much Japanese but he is great at demonstrating and miming what language failed to communicate. The one and only downside is that we didn't get to cook the soba ourselves, but since these guys are professionals, it makes sense for them to do that simple part. Before you eat, you grind fresh wasabi from the root, which tastes different than any other wasabi- and honestly I don't usually like wasabi. Seriously it's a delicious and authentic experience I would repeat in a heartbeat. They take tons of photos with your phone or camera while you do it too so it doesn't get dirty and you have the whole experience documented. It's not marked on the outside, but it's located right where the map says it is so its an easy find.

The instruction was carefully presented by friendly professionals. They made the tedious task of noodle making a lot of fun for children and adults alike. eating our own cooking upstairs was icing on the cake. Couldn't have asked for a nicer experience. The facility was very clean. Instructors were accommodative of our English-speaking.
Leave extra time to find the kitchen because it is located in an alley off the main tourist thorough fare.

As I sometimes make Western sweets but hardly make Japanese sweets, I made a reservation for this interesting experience.
It is kind of far from the center of Arashiyama, but it was a very superb store of Japanese sweets.
On the day for which I made a reservation, there were college students from Taiwan who were visiting to commemoratw their graduation, and about 20 people were there.
As they did not know Japanese, I was wondering how the teacher was going to teach, but a man who makes the Japanese sweets came to them and taught them how to prepare the sweets. They were so happy and excited. As for me, I am a clumsy person, but I was able to make a relatively satisfying Japanese confectionery.
I made three fresh sweets, hydrangea, fringed pink, and tsuyunosato (name of confectionery), and a Kizato, which looks like it was clipped. The wagashi are very delicate, but since the confectionery maker taught us one by one, even a person like me could make it. Using a spatula and cloth is also an interesting experience.
Furthermore, making method also differs a little for each type of confectionery, which was fun.
After making, you can taste the confectionery you made with green tea at the store. You can also bring back some other confectionery too. I'm so glad I could take some as a souvenir. I want to make these again!

Be prepared to enter the kitchen of the traditional Kyoto housing! Being 6’ 1” & weighing 180lbs, a kitchen made for the standard Japanese physic was tight! Still the instructor was well prepared so stress was minimal once the class began.
If the first shock was the kitchen size, the next was that Japanese dishes are prepared with 3 or 4 primary seasonings! Sounded simple until the instructor took out a wood like object for the main seasoning!
This dried bonito (not wood) collaborating with the dried kelp broth created the “Dashi” used in each dish prepared. The broth flavorful, but not too strong, enhanced the flavor of each ingredient, making each dish taste differently. Truly surprising!
And the accompaniment of the instructor during the meal was a delight too. I got me additional cooking tips and table manners to take home!
My goal in taking this course was to surprise my Japanese wife. And the written recipe (included in the course) came in very handy back home!
