Kyo-Yuzen Hand Dyed Accessories Workshop in a Traditional Kyoto Machiya

Kyo-Yuzen Dyeing

Reviewed by: Vicky- Australia

The activity was fun and we enjoyed doing it but I feel it should be renamed.
This activity was more stencilling on a small wall hanging rather than the 'dyeing' we expected. There were many stencils to choose from and we were allowed plenty of time. Demonstrations were good & the explanations clear. This is a good family activity or for someone wanting to do some easy Japanese craftwork. Just be clear- it is using various applications of colour with a stiff brush over stencils that line up to create an overall picture on a small wall hanging.

Reviewed by: よんり

Cool Traditional Crest Printing Experience in Kyoto

Come for Mon, stay for fun!

Reviewed by: Shona M

The lady who runs this place is so fun. She seems to have a few students who are nice and cool. They let you choose what item you want to print on, and what family crest, also known as mon. Even if you don't know Japanese the teacher will still try to communicate with you using the Google Translate app. It works great, so you can communicate a lot. They also have a special drinking fountain, from Alice you can sample or buy bottles. The water is especially sweet and smooth, good foraking matcha, rice, and drinks. It's totally different from any other water
Also, your teacher will help you find Nishiki market if you ask. Really fun!

Paint with wax and dye!

Reviewed by: Shona M

The man who runs this class is very nice. An old lady also helps. You get to pick a design and practice painting it before you do your final copy. You can choose what you paint on. The man helps you dye the fabric and remove the wax. He really looked after my kimono to protect it from the dye. Highly recommend if you like batik or want to know more about Japanese culture. The dye changes color right before your eyes!

Gold Kindami Yuzen Kyoto Fabric Dying and Handcrafts Lesson

Artisans teach you for real!

Reviewed by: Shona M

It was such a privilege and honour to learn a true Japanese fabric technique from and artisan who had been working for 60 years! Finding the place is a little tricky, but it is so worth it. The bag you get in the end is made of durable denim and good for holding any little trinkets you collect in your travels. I was there in spring so I was able to buy a box of sakura manju, too. :) you can do this alone or with children. I recommend bringing friends.

Japanese Washi Paper Souvenir Book Making Lesson in Kyoto

Rubbing elbows with true artisans!

Reviewed by: Shona M

The staff here are so nice. They served me right away, even though I came very early. They like to explain a lot about Japanese history and culture. The book binding is organised to be quick and easy to do, so that both kids and adults can enjoy it. I only wish I could have learned more about the process! If only I knew more Japanese language!
What really impressed me, however, is that they built some katagami, or traditional artisan stencilling, often done on silk. Kozaka San and Monoba San really are great to chat with as well, and well tolerate poor Japanese language skills. :)

Unique Shibori Cloth Dyeing Experience in Kyoto

Best part of 2 weeks in Japan!

Reviewed by: Serine

The Shibori dyeing class was absolutely incredible. The host had perfect English and was incredibly welcoming. We were sat down and shown different examples of patterns and colours, chose which ones we wanted and made our own scarf! It was a lot of fun, and the best part of a two week holiday spent throughout Japan. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone who doesn't mind spending time in excellent and knowledgable company, and taking home their very own souvenir (as well as the complementary kimono trying on session).

Half Day Traditional Batik and Indigo Dyeing Lesson in Kyoto

Such fun! Best kind of souvenir

Reviewed by: Laura

Highly recommended activity, good for all artistic abilities. We found the place easily with Google Maps, and the signage is easy to see. There are so many pictures to choose from, perhaps the hardest thing is to decide which one(s) you want to make. We did the tapestry with seaming (it is folded over and sewn at the top so that you can put a hanging bar through it) and all of us chose at least 2 images to fill up the space and create a unique picture. There are both simpler and more intricate designs available for you to trace. You get to practice painting the wax onto a blank cloth before you do your real one. You'll get better as you go, and they had us start on the easiest parts first, so it worked out well. Our mistakes and imperfections didn't take away from the finished product- it is a pretty forgiving medium. They were all beautiful, and even the one of us that was worried that hers didn't look good was impressed with it after the dyeing process. The language barrier was not a problem, and we received a good amount of guidance as we worked. They were both really friendly and helpful. We would definitely come again!

Handmade Pottery Experience using a Potter's Wheel near Kiyomizudera Temple

An hour of peace and creativity

Reviewed by: KPheart

We found the shop after a little hunt, it is just past the little temple on the left on the way up to the big entrance to the big temple, it has little paper crafts and other things for sale and the pottery room is out the back.
We enjoyed the peace of working with the clay for an hour. Our teacher spoke no english but we had english instructions with pictures and he went through each step very carefully with us. It was just my 15 year old daughter and myself so we took our time and had fun.
The wheel is a hand turned wheel which is easy to use and very relaxing when you have a rhythm going.
We recommend the experience highly. The postage to australia is expensive, but we think it was worth it.

Traditional Japanese Art Lesson

Good time doing art. Great for all levels

Reviewed by: Dominika

My partner and I are fairly experienced in painting and wanted to learn the traditional Japanese way of painting. It was in between using gouche and watercolour. Our teacher was very kind and it was set in a quieter part of town in a home business. There were lots of beautiful art done by our teacher around. It was nice to meet another artist. The illustrations were already drawn for us to paint with very Japanese style designs, there were many to choose from and all were gorgeous. We had a really nice time. Some afternoon tea was provided and a sweet potato :)
