I was able to learn from someone who has won numerous awards. It's a simple task of coloring. However, I had to be careful not to hit the gold, and since I was mixing the colors myself, it took longer than planned as I was considering the color scheme. I feel like I was able to understand a little of the craftsman's struggles. I'm glad I participated in this experience, as it not only allowed me to enjoy gold-embellished Yuzen but also changed the way I look at kimonos! I chose a drawstring bag because I wanted to use it for my goshuincho (temple stamp book), and there's plenty of room even for two books. I want to cherish it!

I live in Kyoto, so I didn't visit for sightseeing, but I love wagashi (Japanese sweets), so I made a reservation with a friend and went.

It was more difficult than I expected, but the instructor was kind and taught us patiently, so I was able to finish without giving up.

It was so much fun that I want to go back and experience it again every month!

It's easy to find the location as it's straight from the station, making access very good. Perhaps because I went during a three-day weekend, there were quite a few participants, around 30 people. The instructor demonstrates in front, but also comes around to explain to those in the back, so there's no need to worry. The processes like coloring aren't too difficult, and it's fun to create! However, it seemed challenging for those with small children. Bringing the red bean paste to the center and making it look nice was indeed difficult, and I truly felt the skill of the artisans (laughs). Since it's treated as a dining establishment, eating and drinking inside the facility seems to be prohibited. You can eat what you've made on the spot, and drinks can be requested additionally. We mentioned we didn't need any since we planned to go to a café next, and there was no particular pressure to order. The time required was as stated, 70 minutes.

飲食店扱いなので、施設内で飲食することは禁止のようです。完成したものをその場で食べることもでき、飲み物は追加で希望できます。私たちは次にカフェに行く予定だったので不要とお伝えしましたが、特に勧められることありませんでした。

During my solo trip, I found a perfect experience tour that I could book since it was within walking distance from my hotel. Heading a bit south on Oike Street, I entered a charming machiya-style building where a workshop was located. There were many school trip students there, lively painting their designs.

Since I was alone, I went up to the quiet second floor of the machiya. The building had been beautifully renovated, and my spirits were lifted. This time, I painted on an obi-age, but there were various options available, such as cotton eco bags, pouches, and smartphone cases. Additionally, there were stencils! There were so many types that it was hard to choose, and I instantly fell in love with a 'cat' stencil that was different from what I had originally planned.

There were three stencils, and to keep them in place, I fixed them with washi tape in two spots and further secured them with a needle, then painted with a brush. Until I got the hang of it, I struggled to blend the colors well, and I ended up applying too much color in some areas. There was a sample available, but it was challenging to figure out how to layer the colors like that. It was a fun three hours that flew by while I was focused. Finally, I decided on the fabric dye color, and it will be mailed to me in a month.

私は個人なので、静かな町屋の2階へ。町屋造りの建物をうまくリノベーションして、気分は上がるばかり。
今回、帯揚げに描きましたが、綿エコバッグやポーチ、スマホケースなどいろいろと種類がありました。さらに、型紙！！これがまた悩んで困るほど種類があり、自分の予定したものとは違う『ねこ』型紙に一目ぼれ。
型紙は３つあり、位置がずれないようにマステを２か所固定し、さらに針で打って、はけでクルクル塗っていきます。コツをつかむまではうまくぼかせず、どっかり色が乗ってしまったなあと。見本が一応あり、いかにそのように色を載せるのかがむつかしかったです。集中しながらも楽しく、あっという間の３時間でした。最後に布の染色カラーを決めて、１か月後に郵送されるtのこと。
どんな出来上がりとなるのか、今からとても楽しみです。

The reservation was for two adults, so they prepared snacks for two people, and we experienced it as a family of three with my husband and our one-and-a-half-year-old daughter. Each step was explained and demonstrated carefully, making it very easy to understand.

My daughter played with the provided tools (like chopsticks) and dropped them on the floor, but they quickly replaced them with new ones.

We could choose to eat the wagashi we made on-site or take them home, and since we had originally reserved for takeout, the process of receiving the box was smooth. When we ate them at home, they were incredibly delicious, and we were impressed.

As for infection control measures, there was temperature checking and disinfection at the entrance, a recommendation for silent eating, and a mask-wearing requirement.

申し込みは大人2名なので、2名分のお菓子を用意していただき、夫と1歳半の娘と3人で体験しました。
一つ一つの工程を丁寧に説明、実演してくださり、とてもわかりやすかったです。
娘は、用意されている道具(お箸など)で遊んでしまい、床に落としてしまいましたが、すぐに新しいものと交換してくれました。

作った和菓子はその場で食べるか、持ち帰りを選択でき、もともと持ち帰りで予約していたので箱の受け取りもスムーズにしてくださいました。
家に帰ってから食べると、とても美味しくて感動しました。

感染症対策として、入り口で検温と消毒、黙食の推奨、マスク着用義務がありました。

We decided to eat the sweets we made on the spot, and although drinks were an additional charge, they created a welcoming vibe. I participated alone, but thanks to the kind and attentive staff, I had a great time! I was a bit worried about sitting seiza on tatami mats, but it was nice that both the sweets-making and tea experiences were done sitting at a table and chairs! The explanation for the sweets-making was a bit fast, and I barely managed to keep up, but there were examples, and I did fairly well! They provided red bean paste from a shop in Kyoto, and it was very delicious! I had the tea experience as well, so it wasn't a problem for me, but I felt that the recommendation for a drink at 500 yen, since outside drinks were prohibited, was a bit pushy for other customers. I thought it would be nice to offer a small amount of tea or water for those taking sweets home. I felt that could have been a bit more considerate. They also set aside time for photography, and it was great that they helped with the shooting and lent out photo backdrops! It was a very Kyoto-like experience, so I would like to bring my friends next time!

一人での参加でしたがスタッフの方々が優しく丁寧に教えてくだったおかげで楽しめました！畳に正座するのかなと不安でしたが、お菓子づくりもお茶もテーブルと椅子に座っての体験で良かった！お菓子づくりの説明のスピードが少し速くてついていくのがやっとでしたが、見本もありまあまあ上手くできました！京都のお店のあんこを用意してくれて、味もとても美味しかったです！私はお茶の体験もあったので問題なかったですが、他のお客さんに対して持ち込みの飲み物が禁止とのことで1杯500円のドリンクのおすすめが少ししつこいかなと感じた。お菓子食べて帰る用に少量のお茶か水くらい出してもいいのでは？と思いそのへんもう少し親切だったらなと感じました。撮影の時間も設けてあり、撮影手伝ってくれたり撮影用の台紙の貸し出しもよかった！京都らしい体験できたのでまた次回は友達連れて行きたいなと思いました！
