Guidelines for foreign tourists could be a lot better
Reviewed by: Kevin, 2019/05/05There was no issue in finding the location and to get the ticket at the booth with the voucher from Veltra. I purchased Special Seat without the tea ceremony.
Thereafter, we were ushered into a hall where the tea ceremony was held. I did not know it was that when I was in the queue. When they serve tea, they realized that I didnt purchase with it and they asked me to purchase a separate ticket for it (though it was in my intention to opt out). There was no briefing during the tea ceremony as to what was supposed to happen in the process.
After that we went into a room while waiting to enter the performance hall. Although I bought a special seat unfortunately I was given the second last row of the hall. There were staff walking around with signs in Japanese which I figured later they were renting out translator machines. The group of staff while walking around with those did not mention anything in English nor were there any signs in English whatsoever.
The performance was split into 2 sections. The first was like a drama and it was difficult to enjoy the show without translation. The srcond brief was more on dance and it wad quite beautiful.
Staff could be more conversational in English throughout. A lot of foreign tourists were lost in their way from the tea ceremony to the performance as well.

Great experience!

The performance itself consisted of two dances, a game with Maiko San and answering questions about life of Maikos. The only thing I wished that the translation was more accurate. The translator was not always able to translate the questions and answers. Overall, the experience was very interesting and if I had chance, I would go again.

Wonderful evening

Our English interpreters were also lovely, welcoming and helpful. The maiko only performed one dance for us instead of the two described in the event, but we still had an amazing time.

Trip Highlight!

The atmosphere was dreamy and the meal was lovely. The Maiko herself was charming and beautiful! We would recommend this to anyone fortunate enough to visit Kyoto.

"Memoirs of a Geisha" dream come true
Reviewed by: Couple from Canada, 2019/03/17Absolutely loved the experience of meeting Maiko. I finally fulfilled my "Memoirs of a Geisha" dream Haha The name of our Maiko was Fukuya, and she was beautiful, answered all our questions, was very nice and I loved playing the game with her!
The only reason my review is 4 stars and not 5 is only because of a bit of a mix up with our food. The husband really doesn't like fish, so we had made sure ahead of time that he wouldn't be getting any seafood, but pretty much his entire meal contained fish, all but for a little steak. So, I ended up eating 1.5 meals (I hate wasting food) hahaha But, other than the hubby having very little food, the food was really great! So delicious!
I would definitely recommend a meet up with a Maiko if you get that chance. We didn't see 1 Maiko or Geisha walking around, so if seeing one of these beautiful ladies is on your bucket list, book a visit! We absolutely loved it, it was a big trip highlight.

特に質疑応答は、めったにないチャンスだと思います。
舞妓さんの苦労などがわかりました。
まだ１０代なのに、とてもしっかりしていて、びっくりしました。
写真撮影、踊り鑑賞、ちょとした芸妓遊びはとても思い出になりました。

A great "sampler" of Kyoto Maiko culture
Reviewed by: Angie, 2018/12/05This experience is a great "sampler" or introduction to Kyoto's Maiko history and culture. There was a short tea ceremony (some lovely Japanese ladies who were also attending were great for explaining the proper etiquette, but that's definitely not required). They served a small plate of sweets with the tea, and I must say the tea was the most perfect temperature - hot but not too hot to drink! The maiko also did 3 dances to recorded music which were so graceful and precise! Finally, there was a time to speak to the maiko directly and ask questions. If you're thirsty, they do sell drinks. It's a small facility that some taxi drivers may not be familiar with, so be prepared with an address! Overall, it's a lovely introduction to the culture that's worth the time to visit!

おぼこいぃ～♪
Reviewed by: エチゴヤ, 2018/11/22舞妓さんは宮川町 堀八重(お茶屋兼置屋)の”ふく友梨”さんが来てくれて、昼食の仕出し弁当を食べながら”ホンモノ”の舞妓さんと楽しいひと時をすごさせて貰いました。
華麗な装いで、たおやかな舞を二曲も（今回は「京の四季」と「祇園小唄」）披露してもらえて、舞妓さんに関する質問にも答えてもらえたり・・・全員ではないですがお茶屋遊び（こんぴら舟々）でお大尽気分を味わえたり？・・・それに撮影フリーですし、おまけに2ショットまで撮ってもらえちゃいます～！
京都に来たらコレでしょッ！！・・・ってくらい初めてって方にも敷居の低いイベントなので皆さんも是非ぃ～～♪
最後に：たまに見かけるなんちゃって舞妓と違ってホンモノの舞妓さんは行儀作法からして厳しく指導されてるので、とても10代とは思えぬほどに佇まいからして雰囲気が違いますよ！

There were only 4 couples in the room with excellent girls who interpreted for us and the maiko, who spent quite a long time at each table after her performance etc. .We learned a lot about the tradition. Lots of lovely food and drink served. Fantastic evening- best ever.

昨年11月にお見世出し（舞妓デビュー）した舞妓初年生で・・・おぼこい、おぼこいぃ～♪ ^ ^
お茶のお点前もまごついてるとちゃんと席まで来て教えて貰えましたし、舞も定番の「祇園小唄」と扇子を使った「もみじの橋」←（やや自信なし）の2曲をしっとりと魅させて貰いました～。
Q&Aにもしっかりと答えて貰えますし、写真撮影時にはポーズのリクエストにも応えて貰えたりと非常にコストパフォーマンスが良いので・・・ちょっと敷居が高いんじゃ？な～んて思ってるそこの貴方（女）にもお薦めです～。

A Special Experience

The show itself was authentic, nice to learn more details about this art and culture including via direct conversation with the performing Maiko. A great way to round off a memorable stay in Kyoto.

しゅらしゅしゅしゅ（？）で負けてしまったのですが、舞妓さんにお酌していただいて飲める機会なんて、もうないんじゃないでしょうか（笑）
千社札も綺麗で、お写真も一緒に撮っていただけて、本当に幸せな体験でした。

不公平感があった。全ての席を椅子にして、全員が近くで舞妓を見れるようにして欲しい。席が舞妓より遠く、近くで見れない不満が残った。500円払わないといけないところなど、少し儲け主義なような気がした。質問の時間をもっと取ってほしい。また、説明はマイクを使って欲しい。声が聞こえにくかった。つまり、お客さんがもっと満足するよう企業努力してほしい。

It was a fabulous evening.

It was a highlight of our trip to Japan. The staff were very welcoming and friendly and the dinner was delicious! We enjoyed the Maiko's dances and especially getting to speak to her and interract with her. There were only 6 of us at dinner so there was lots of time to speak to Maiko and she was happy to answer all of my questions! We enjoyed playing the games with her as well and I even beat her at one of them! I would strongly recommend this evening to anyone who wants to experience the mysterious geisha world up close and personal. I loved every minute of it!

Rare Opportunity to Watch Geisha
Reviewed by: MaryWilder, 2018/06/13I would recommend this show to anyone who is in Kyoto during the performance period and who would like to see authentic geisha. The costumes and dances were beautiful and well worth the expense. Know beforehand that the show has speaking parts in Japanese with no translation, but an English programme is available for purchase. I opted for electronic tickets through VELTRA and had no issues picking up tickets from the box office. Our tickets included a tea ceremony, where we received delicious tea, a sweet, and a souvenir plate.

Lots of fun, a bit of culture, and a very enjoyable dinner!
