Classic Tea Ceremony with Full Cha-Kaiseki Cuisine and Matcha Green Tea in Tokyo

The Most Authentic Tea Ceremony Experience

Reviewed by: Ian, 2016/08/05

Most tea ceremony experiences are in the form of a performance. You don't experience the feeling of host and guest that is the original purpose of "the way of tea"---a framework for communication and meditation. Of course, as a guest without knowledge of the tea ceremony you can only be a spectator not a true guest and participant.

Mat-Cha-Doh does an excellent job of teaching you to be more than a spectator of the ceremony. With an interpreter and instruction you are a participant in what is more than a ceremony---a meeting of host and guest within the framework taught by the Urasenke School of Tea. And surrounded by an authentic tea house with wood from the great temples of Nara, and centuries old tea ware, this is truly a once in a lifetime experience!!

  • The other guests were freaking out when I held up this centuries old tea bowl for a photo. Oops.

  • Presented with matcha

  • At the end, we practiced making matcha ourselves. L

Wear Kimono in Asakusa with a Rental Dress Up Experience in Tokyo

Mother/daughter experience

Reviewed by: Penny, 2016/07/13

I did this with my 12y.o daughter. It was a great experience. Even though we don't speak Japanese, the ladies looked after us and did our hair & makeup as well as dressed us. They were very friendly and polite. The dressing up was just as much fun as the walking about. We only lasted 90 mins in costume as it was a hot sultry day and a festival was on so very crowded when we walked to the temple.

  • Many people wanted to photograph my daughter, and especially old women were appreciative of us being in kimonos.

Elegant Kimono Photo Shoot Experience in Tokyo

You should do it!

Reviewed by: HappyHawaiian, 2016/06/29

Wear a real kimono? Check that off the bucket list and preserve those memories in one easy experience. The studio is conveniently located near to Meguro station, within walking distance, even for a two and three year old. The two owners are fluent in English and were EXCELLENT in helping to prepare and photograph my rambunctious toddlers...not an easy feat! Our family looked GREAT and the pictures are fantastic!

My only caution is that although the description reads "40 cuts", you actually only receive your top two choices and need to pay more in order to have all of your pics put onto a cd. It was still a reasonable price, it's just that we weren't expecting additional costs prior to arriving, although it was made clear to us at the beginning of the session.

All in all, the ladies went above and beyond to give us a wonderful family experience.

Comments from activity operators

Dear HappyHawaiian, thank you very much for your review. We are very happy that you had a great time here. Yes, we had a very good time with your kids as well! And I really apprecaite your advice about the price. I've been thinking how to clearly state about the price of all of the pictures (with my limited English ability). We consider it and will state clearly for our customers' satisfaction. Arigato-gozaimasu :)

Wear Kimono in Asakusa with a Rental Dress Up Experience in Tokyo

Kimono Rental at Sakura Photo Studio

Reviewed by: Yolette, 2016/06/11

Short review: BOOK IT NOW! Do not hesitate and just do it!

Detailed review:
My boyfriend and I had a wonderful time! We got to choose from a huge collection of kimonos (seemed like 100+ styles for women). The ladies spoke English decently and put in a lot of effort to putting on my kimono. I am on the bustier side (34Ds) and after teasing that they were "too big", the lady wrapped them up tightly and made me feel and look beautiful (so don't be worried, busty ladies!).

I didn't have a choice on hairstyle (or I wasn't asked what I wanted). I just let the lady do what she felt was best. After doing my hair, I got to choose a hair piece from the "free" collection or fancier ones for an extra 500 yen.

We then roamed Asakusa and felt like celebrities! Everyone were taking pictures of us and with us. One thing I regret forgetting to do was buying an umbrella to look even more the part, but we still had a blast!

I definitely recommend this to everyone! Try to go right when they open so you have the first pick for kimonos!

Tea Ceremony, Green Tea Sampling and Wagashi Sweets Tasting Tour in Tokyo

Tea immersion!

Reviewed by: Dolce, 2016/04/16

I must admit, I thought that this might be a bit pricy, even with the review rebate, but it was totally worth it.

The guide picked us up at the station wearing a kimono and spoke perfect English. The walk to the tea room was very pleasant, and everyone was so welcoming.

The tea room was beautiful (and located in an apartment, which was kinda neat) and the teacher was very nice. Her matcha was delicious, and we got to try to make our own too (along with lots of sweets, yay), to varying degrees is success.

At the tea store the owner let us sample 4 different kinds of really unusual green teas, and the lady at the sweets shop loaded us up with even more yummy treats. It was a great in-depth view into the world of Japanese tea.

My husband and I learned so much and had such a great time, thank you!

Private Tea Ceremony Experience with Take-Home Yukata in Tokyo

Authentic Insight into Japanese Culture

Reviewed by: Aaron Eames, 2016/04/11

We attended the experience for my friend's birthday as a surprise. The location was easy to find, we do happen to live in Tokyo but it was very close to the station and the map provided was simple to follow. The instructors welcomed us enthusiastically and invited us to get started right away.

First we chose our yukata, a light and casual summer garment, and obi, a sash to hold the yukata closed, from a couple of options. The instructors demonstrated how to put it on and then it was our turn. We tried it out a few times so I left feeling I might be able to do it correctly in future (i.e. without their constant help...). They also told us a little about the history and conventions of the costume, such as not wrapping the right side over the left since that's how the dead are dressed for funerals. Then it was photo time and various props (swords, fans and umbrellas) were available.

After that we proceeded to the tea ceremony. The instructors explained each stage of the ritual-like event and taught us how to enter, move around in, and sit in the tearoom. Then they served us Japanese sweets and prepared the tea, matcha, green tea with a strong, bitter taste. Guests eat the sweets first to counteract the bitterness (or enhance it, depending on your preferences) and the tea is whisked to a frothy texture making it deliciously smooth. We even had chance to make the tea ourselves and serve each other which was much more difficult than the instructor made it look!

Overall we had a great time and I recommend this experience to anyone who's interested in the tea ceremony or wanting to learn how to wear a yukata. A perfect introduction!
